SILVERFISH INSECT

The silverfish insect is so named because it has a fish-like appearance as it crawls around, and it is more often than not, silver colored as well. It is an insect that can cause tremendous damage in a home if left unchecked.

Silverfish eat paper that has been treated with glue, so books are notorious food for them, as are keepsakes like photo albums. Silverfish also will eat wallpaper because it is put up with wallpaper paste, a starch that silverfish find delectable. Your clothing is in danger too, in particular your starched clothing, as they will eat not only the starch but the material as well.

The silverfish’s principal residence is the dampest region of your home, thus leaky pipes are the welcome mat for the silverfish insect, as are any leaky roofs you may have. Silverfish are frequently found in damp basements for just that reason too.

Your own human foods will attract silverfish as well. You can imagine what a feast a box of cereal is to a silverfish! Cereal contains the starch that it loves and to boot it contains sugar, which silverfish also have an affinity for. Actually they are not very picky eaters, because in addition to sugar and starch, they will eat cotton, linen and silk as well as shaving cream, shampoos and yes, even soaps!

Based on what you now know about silverfish, you can understand that doing away with them means removing their foods, and making your home a drier location by blocking all instances of dampness. You should also obstruct how they are coming into your home too, which means closing up all cracks, and enclosing all pipes.

If you currently have a very bad silverfish infestation, be sure and look at stored books kept in damp locations, and even check under your wallpaper.
